The
Jakarta Hotel Bombing
It was very sad for Jakarta on Friday.
This is very unpredictable, when most people wanted to start their daily
activities in the morning, suddenly the bomb exploded. It was around 7:48 a.m.
on Friday the two luxury hotels in Jakarta were attacked by the so-called
terrorist. It was in the Ritz-Carlton and J.W.Marriot. As many as 50 people were reported injured by
the blasts, and at least 9 dead. The first bomb went off in J.W.Marriot, and a
couple of minutes later the second bomb went off in Ritz-Carlton Hotel, nearby
the previous hotel.
Most people are wonder why it could
happen. The security of these two hotels
was very strict after the bombing blast in J.W.Marriot in 2003. Given the 2003
bombing of the J.W.Marriot, the Ritz-Carlton’s security had been stepped up.
People can’t drive to the lobby but have to come in from the back. There are
major metal barriers, vehicles are searched and people walking in see armed
guards at a checkpoint. Visitors have to stop and have their bags searched
before going through metal detector.
This is still a big question. Who the
actor of this bombing is, what the motive is, and how they could attack the two
hotels. However, Police and security officials investigating the two suicide
bombs that exploded on Friday at luxury hotels in Jakarta have
blamed the attacks on the leader of an Islamist militant group, Noordin
Mohammed Top, the Malaysian-born leader of a violent faction of the radical
Islamist Jemaah Islamiyah network, and who is one of the most wanted terror
suspects in Asia, though no one has claimed responsibility. "There are
strong indications that Noordin Top's group is behind the attacks because the
bombs were hand-made and the tactic was suicide bombings," Ansyaad Mbai,
the anti-terror desk chief of the Indonesian Security Ministry, told the AFP
news agency.
Police suspect Noordin of being involved
in the 2002 bombings in Bali nightclubs that killed over 200
people, and being the mastermind behind three other attacks in Indonesia: the
bombings of the Jakarta Marriott in 2003, the Australian embassy in 2004 and
Bali restaurants in 2005. He is known to be a master bomb-maker, and police say
the devices used in Friday’s attacks were the same as those discovered during a
raid last week of an Islamic boarding school in Central Java, suspected of
being used by Noordin as a hideout. Noordin is still on the run, but his wife
was reported arrested during the raid. "I can't say the attacks yesterday
were an act of retaliation for the recent arrests, but I can say that the
police are getting very close to capturing Noordin," said Mbai. Noordin
has narrowly escaped arrest several times in the six years the Indonesian
authorities have been chasing him.
