Is it time to give military and police
right to vote in Indonesia?
Indonesia
is one of country without voting right to military and police. Some people said
2014 would be the perfect time to allow police and military to vote president
and vice president, while others argued that such a political right among the
armed forces would only hamper the nation’s fledgling democracy.
Giving
right to vote for police and military can show their commitment to reform.
After all, these personnel have the same rights as citizens, and granting them
voting rights supports our democracy. In most of the other democratic countries, the constitution guarantees every eligible
citizen’s right to vote and hence,
there are no limitations regarding the
voting rights of the military personnel or other civil servants. There many
countries with voting right to military and police such as Australia, United
Kingdom, Germany, China, Canada, Russia, United States, new Zealand, France,
Philippines and Venezuela (data from http://aceproject.org),
actually there no problem over there about that.
Some
people in Indonesia worry about voting rights that would be misused by people
with power in the military and the police. Actually this political right would
harm the country if police and military misuse their right to do political
mobilization. Furthermore, Indonesia has bitter experience with the Army in the
past when Suharto was a president of Indonesia for 32 years.
